Ricardo Febry founded Hospice Associates of New Orleans LLC in 2004 to pursue the eradication of one size fits all hospice care led by non-physicians. And to see its replacement with individualized plans of care developed by hospitalist physicians experienced in symptom management and end-of-life comfort care. Patients are assigned to a Hospice Associates physician to oversee and direct individualized care plans, providing each patient and caregiver(s) unprecedented access to the same hospice team nurse, nurse practitioner, and physician on-demand, 24/7. In this model, patients generally reach and maintain physical comfort within 24-hrs after admission and receive counseling and emotional support on an ongoing basis from familiar team members.
Dr. Febry is board-certified in Internal Medicine and brings over 26 years of experience in ambulatory, emergency, inpatient, critical, geriatrics, and end-of-life care to our organization. He obtained his BS in biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1980 and an MSc in Comparative Physiology from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in 1985. He then served as a Research Associate in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pharmacology of the University of Miami School of Medicine through 1987. Dr. Febry then graduated from his home state’s University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1991 and completed post-graduate training in Internal Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1994. After years of practice in primary care-based at Touro Infirmary Hospital, he founded Internal Medicine Consultants, LLC., a medical group dedicated to serving hospitals and long-term care communities in the Greater New Orleans area.
Dr. Febry fell in love with New Orleans the day he arrived to interview for his residency training in 1991 and has since called this city his home. He and his wife Helen, a New Orleans native, met in Miami and married in 1985. They currently enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, cooking, gardening, and traveling together.
